Boorong / Wergaia
Tchingal
Tchingal is the Boorong emu in the Coalsack. Stanbridge wrote it down at Lake Tyrrell in 1857.
The Boorong, a Wergaia clan, told William Stanbridge they prided themselves on knowing more astronomy than any other tribe. He listed about forty sky names. Tchingal is the dark emu whose head is the Coalsack.
Museums Victoria’s planetarium fact sheet retells the hunt: brothers Bram, Weetkurrk, and the making of western Victorian Country. That is a published outreach retelling of Stanbridge, not a new ethnography.
Stellarium’s Boorong figures are CC BY-SA 4.0 (Morieson and Cherney). Mercury’s /sky silhouette is an original diagram of the same identifications. Adapted figure files, if we ever ship Stellarium art, must stay share-alike.
Mercury 91 is not affiliated with any Aboriginal Land Council, Torres Strait Islander organisation, museum, or Stellarium. This library cites published ethnoastronomy. It is not a partnership and not a single pan-Aboriginal sky.
